How this calculation works
CGPA combines grade points using the credits attached to each course. A high-credit course affects the average more than a low-credit course. Enter each course’s grade point and credits together, using the grade scale and included courses specified by your institution. The result is a weighted average; an official percentage conversion is a separate calculation with its own programme rules.
Worked example
This example uses illustrative inputs. Your current result is shown above.
Suppose Mathematics earns grade point 9 for 4 credits, Physics earns 8 for 3 credits and a laboratory earns 10 for 1 credit. Their credit points are 36, 24 and 10. Total credits are 4 + 3 + 1 = 8, so CGPA = (36 + 24 + 10) ÷ 8 = 8.75. The simple average of the three grades would be 9.0 and would ignore their different weights.
Assumptions and limits
- Each grade point is on the same 0–10 scale and paired with its course credit in the matching position.
- Credits must be positive; include zero grade points for failed courses only when the institution counts those credits in the cumulative average.
- Repeated courses, exclusions and official rounding follow the institution’s rules, not an automatic policy chosen by this calculator.
Questions people ask
Do I enter marks, letter grades or grade points?
Enter numerical grade points from your institution’s grading table, such as 8 or 9 on a 10-point scale. Marks out of 100 and letter grades must first be mapped using the official course rules; there is no universal conversion.
Can I average my semester GPAs to get CGPA?
Only if all semesters carry equal credits. Otherwise weight each semester GPA by its credits, or enter the individual courses. For example, a 20-credit semester must contribute more than a 10-credit semester.
How should I handle a failed or repeated subject?
Use the grade and included credits specified by the transcript rules. Some institutions replace a failed grade after a resit; others retain or exclude attempts differently. This calculator does not decide which attempts count.
How can I find the grades needed to raise my CGPA?
Open Target CGPA & Semester Planner with the calculated CGPA and completed credits. It shows the average required in the remaining credits and the highest final result still mathematically possible.
