How this calculation works
Work backwards from a desired overall course percentage to the score needed on the remaining assessment. Enter your average on completed work, not its already-weighted contribution, and ensure completed and remaining weights total 100%. The required score can expose a target that is already secured or impossible without extra credit.

A current score of 75% over 70% of the course contributes 75 × 0.70 = 52.5 points. For an 80% target and a 30% final, required score = (80 − 52.5)/0.30 ≈ 91.67%.
Assumptions and limits
- Completed and remaining weights are positive and sum to 100%.
- The same percentage score is assumed across the combined remaining assessment weight.
- The feasibility flag tests whether the required score itself lies between 0% and 100%; extra credit, minimum exam passes and grade curves are not modelled.
Questions people ask
What does a required score above 100% mean?
Under the entered weights, the target cannot be reached with ordinary scores up to 100%. Confirm the inputs before considering whether your course has separate extra-credit or resit rules.
What does a negative required score mean?
The completed contribution already meets the target even with zero on the remaining component. The result is arithmetic; separate compulsory-pass requirements may still apply.
